User Guide

ShibusNow is a free web app that shows how many minutes until the next Kagoshima City Bus departs — just pick a stop. No installation is required; it works right away in your smartphone or PC browser. This page explains the basics.

1. Pick a stop

On the top screen, choose the stop you want to board from using one of these methods.

  • Search by name or route: Type a stop name (e.g. "Tenmonkan") or a route number (e.g. "11"). Japanese names, hiragana, katakana and English names are supported. Up to 30 suggestions appear, with stop-name matches first; add more characters to narrow the results.
  • Find nearby: Tap "Find from current location" to list nearby stops by distance (location is used on-device only, never sent to a server).
  • Find on map: Tap "Map", then a green stop marker and "View departures". With a keyboard, use Tab to reach a named stop marker and Enter to open its popup.
  • Favorites and recent stops: Use the star in the departure-board header to save up to 6 stops; tap it again at that stop to remove it. Press and hold a favorite on the top screen to drag and reorder it. The 5 most recently viewed stops are also listed.

The last selected stop opens again on your next visit. Use "Change stop" to return to the top screen; this clears the saved stop, so the top screen will also open next time. Nearby search lists up to 5 stops within 5 km, by straight-line distance. If location is unavailable or you are outside the service area, use name search or the map.

Explore routes on the map

The map requests your location when opened; if available, a blue marker shows it. You can also move the map yourself and zoom in to show stop markers. The location button measures your position again.

Tap a stop, then a route and destination in its popup to draw the route in purple. Different paths with the same route and destination appear as "route 1/2", for example. Tap the purple bar to switch routes, or "Clear" or the map background to remove the line. Route-stop popups also have "View departures".

While the first route loads, keyboard focus stays on the stop's action in its popup. With a keyboard, focus returns to "Clear" after switching routes. Clearing a route returns focus to the selected stop's action, or to the map if that stop is outside the displayed area.

The line connects stops in order; it does not trace the roads or track a bus. If stop information has changed, use the reload button shown on the map before displaying a route. Map choices include routes that do not run today. Check today's departures and notices before boarding.

2. View the departure board

Once you pick a stop, upcoming buses are listed soonest first.

  • Minutes remaining: Time until departure, refreshed every 10 seconds while the screen is visible. Waits of an hour or more use hours and minutes. All times use Japan Standard Time (JST).
  • Soon: The minute before scheduled departure. At the scheduled time, "May have already departed" appears.
  • Last: The final departure today for that route and destination at this stop, not necessarily the last bus for the entire route.
  • Up to 5 upcoming buses are shown, plus up to 3 recently scheduled buses for delay reporting.
  • Different buses can share a route, destination and departure time. Tap each card to check the stop order and journey time.
  • If no buses remain, the screen distinguishes finished service, no scheduled service and a full-day suspension. The first bus tomorrow is shown only if tomorrow has service in the data.
  • Stops with 4 or more routes have chips to filter by route. You can select several; tap one again to remove it, or "All" to reset. Unselected routes that do not run today appear faded.

3. Route and scheduled stop times

Tap a bus card with route information to see which stops it will pass and each stop's scheduled time. You can switch between "From here" and "From first stop," and the scheduled journey time to the terminus is also shown. Times and journey durations use scheduled departures, so at stops with a scheduled wait they differ from arrival times. They don't include real-time delays.

"From here" starts at your selected boarding stop. Each "+N min" is measured from that stop's scheduled departure. Registered stop closures or skipped stops appear crossed out with a reason.

Tap a stop beyond where you'll board that allows alighting to set it as your destination — the summary then shows the time to that stop instead of the terminus (tap the same stop again to clear it).

A destination set here applies only to this detail view and is cleared when you close it. To list only buses that go to a place, or to find routes with a change, use "Find a bus by destination" (section 4). Crossed-out stops and stops marked "Boarding only" cannot be selected as a destination.

At some stops, such as Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the actual departure platform(e.g. "East 7") is shown as a badge alongside the route name. The route detail view opened by tapping a bus card also includes a map pinpointing the platform (currently supported for Kagoshima-Chuo Station only).

4. Find a bus by destination

Choose where you are going to list buses you can take from now, soonest first. Direct buses and routes with one change are searched. There are two ways in.

  • From a departure board: Tap "Find a bus by destination" and choose a destination. The board then lists up to 5 buses from that stop to your destination. "Change" picks another destination and "Clear" returns to the normal board. The destination is kept for each stop until you close the tab.
  • From the top screen: Tap "Find by destination", then choose where you board and where you are going (up to 8 results). The starting point can be chosen by name, on the map, from your current location, or from favorites and recent stops. The ⇅ button swaps them. "View departures at ◯◯" opens that stop's board filtered to the same destination.

Besides stop names, some places can be searched by name, such as Kagoshima University, Yamakataya, Amu Plaza and the ferry terminals. For a place, you are guided to whichever registered nearby stop you reach first; walking time between the stop and the place is not included. You can also choose on the map. Your 5 most recent destinations are listed.

Each card shows the departure time, time remaining, the scheduled time at the stop where you get off (based on scheduled departures) and the journey time. For a change, it shows where to change, the wait and the second bus. At stops with separate platforms, such as Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the platform for each bus is also shown. Tap a card to open its route details with your stop to get off already selected; tap the change row for the second bus.

The search uses today's timetable. Changes are only at the same stop, with at least 2 minutes allowed. Registered suspensions and skipped stops are reflected, but delays are not. Ferries and other transport, routes with two or more changes, and walking to another stop to change are not searched. A route with a change appears only if it arrives more than 5 minutes earlier than direct buses leaving at the same time or later. On a departure board, a card also shows "Possible delay" or a delay reported near an earlier stop when its first bus would show it on the normal board, and a bus with a delay report stays listed for 2 minutes after its scheduled time. "Last" and "Tour" labels are shown as on the departure board. The route data is downloaded the first time you search.

5. Report or check delays

If a bus hasn't arrived, tap "Not yet arrived" while the button is available and you are online. For a 10:00 departure, reports are accepted from 10:01 through 10:02 (until 10:03). Your screen shows "Reported"; other users see "Possible delay" at that stop once 2 or more reports are counted. Reports sharing an IP address (for IPv6, the same network prefix) are limited to one for the same stop and bus, and 8 in total within 5 minutes. People on the same Wi-Fi may share this limit. If the same connection has already reported that bus, "Reported" stays on without adding to the count. If the request fails, the total limit is reached, or the reporting window has closed, the initial "Reported" state is undone and the reason is shown.

Official city bus notices appear above departures with the service category. Notices for regular buses, City View, Island View and Bureau-operated Aibus are shown at every stop without route filtering. Status is fetched on opening the board, reconnecting and Refresh, with a server cache of up to 20 minutes and no periodic polling. A warning appears if an update fails, you are offline or the information is over 20 minutes old. No banner does not guarantee normal service. Follow the official-site link for details.

Reports expire 5 minutes after the latest accepted report. Warnings from upstream reports disappear when those reports expire, even if updates fail. They do not extend the time a bus card remains on screen or change scheduled times. "Refresh" fetches delay reports, official service status and the selected stop’s published timetable again. It also reloads routing data when a destination is selected and uses matching timetable data for transfer platforms. If an update fails, the saved information stays visible with a notice. Its fetched-time label refers to delay reports. Reports, including upstream reports, are also fetched automatically at intervals of at least 30 seconds while buses are listed, or a destination search still has candidates within 2 minutes of their scheduled departure. They are user submissions, not official operation data.

Even one report for the same bus at an earlier stop can produce a lighter "possible delay reported near ◯◯" note appears on its card before it even reaches your stop — a heads-up while it's still on its way.

6. Browse the full timetable

"View timetable" shows the full schedule for that stop, split into weekday / Saturday / Sunday and public holiday tabs. Filter by a route-and-destination pair, and use "All" to reset. This filter is separate from the departure board.

There are 3 tabs. The one matching today's schedule is marked "Today" and opens first. It reflects service-calendar exceptions such as the New Year period. Limited-date services, such as City View night buses, appear only on the tab marked "Today" when scheduled to run. Other tabs show the regular schedule for that day type, not a selected future date. If a filter leaves the timetable empty after switching tabs, choose "All" to check the other services.

Registered suspensions or skipped stops are excluded from the departure board and shown crossed out with reasons in today's timetable. Temporary notices may also appear on the top screen or a stop's board. You can close one, but it may reappear after 6 hours or when the Japan date changes. These cover only information entered into the service; check official notices for the latest changes.

7. Share a stop

The "Share" button in the header lets you share a direct link to that stop. In the sharing screen, choose "Copy link" to copy the stop title and URL, or "Share via…" on supported devices to open the OS share sheet. A QR code is also shown, handy for someone to scan on the spot.

The link opens that stop's departures at the time it is viewed. Route filters, a selected bus, your destination and destination filter are not included.

8. Add to Home Screen

Adding the app to your home screen lets you launch it instantly, without opening a browser each time.

  • iPhone (Safari): Tap Share → "Add to Home Screen"
  • Android (Chrome): Tap the menu (⋮) → "Add to Home Screen" or "Install app"

On iPhone and iPad, a Home Screen hint may appear at the bottom of the stop-selection screen or departure board when opened in a browser. It is hidden when running as a Home Screen app. If you close the hint, it stays hidden in that browser while the dismissal remains saved.

Timetables and route details can work offline when successfully cached in this browser. The offline cache keeps up to 30 stop timetables, 40 route patterns and the route-search data for up to 30 days; browser storage limits or clearing site data can remove them sooner. New data, map backgrounds and delay reports need a connection.

While the app is open online, it checks for a new version when you return to it and every 5 minutes while visible. Applying an update may reload the screen automatically. Timetable changes become available after updated data is published with the site.

Timetables and route details switch to the new data version when an app update is applied. Damaged saved transit data is fetched again when a connection is available. Failed timetable and routing loads are retried when the connection or screen returns; you can also use Refresh. If data still appears old, check the official timetable and the FAQ.

9. Text size and language

On the top screen you can choose from 4 text sizes (S / M / L / XL), and switch the display language to English. Text size applies to the interactive app screens; guide and other static pages use their own text sizes.

Settings, favorites and recent stops are saved in this browser, with no account sync. They may be lost if storage is blocked or site data is cleared. Some route and destination names remain in Japanese in the English display.

The "Back to Home" link opens stop selection and keeps your favorites, language and text size. To change the language of a guide or other information page, return home, change the language and reopen the page from the footer.

10. Dark mode

If your device or browser is set to dark mode, the app automatically follows suit. There's no separate toggle inside the app.
